Left-wing teacher groups launch sexist crusade

August 19, 2014 by Kirsten Powers

The “war on women” isn’t just for Republicans. Left-wing organizations in New York City have launched their own misogynist crusade against former CNN anchor turned education advocate Campbell Brown.

Brown is running the Partnership for Educational Justice, which she founded to challenge teacher tenure and other rules that protect underperforming teachers.

For this, she has been on the receiving end of a sexist assault by the American Federation of Teachers and opponents of education reform. AFT President Randi Weingarten took to Twitter to accuse Brown of not being balanced in her approach to school reform because “she’s married to Romney adviser Dan Senor.”

To Weingarten, women are not people with thoughts of their own. No, they’re empty vessels who do their husband’s bidding.

In an interview last week, Brown noted to me that in all of the times her husband has expressed his opinion publicly, “never once has anyone asked him how I influence his views on anything.”

The teachers union-affiliated Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), and New York Communities for Change, which replaced the now-defunct ACORN, launched a website called “The Real Campbell Brown: Right-Wing. Elitist. Wrong about Public Schools,” which depicts Brown as a marionette holding a GOP sign, presumably because her husband is a Republican.

Brown told me that for the decades she worked in journalism, she was a political independent. After leaving the business in 2010, she registered as a Democrat to vote in the New York City primary. She later registered as a Republican for another primary. Today, she’s not registered with either party. As for political donations, she told me she has given to five campaigns, all Democrats who were supportive of school reform. These groups and teacher unions know all of this, yet they havechosen to ignore it.

Never mind that Brown has recruited major Democratic talent to work with her, including former Obama staffers Robert Gibbs and Ben LaBolt. The chairman of her organization is David Boies, who represented Al Gore in Bush v. Gore and spearheaded the legal campaign in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.

There has been no suggestion that these men —none of whom is an education expert — lack the intellect or standing to have an opinion on this topic, whereas Brown has been cast as an interloping bobble head. Education historian Diane Ravitch told The Washington Post of Brown, “She is a good media figure because of her looks, but she doesn’t seem to know or understand anything about teaching and why tenure matters. … I know it sounds sexist to say that she is pretty, but that makes her telegenic, even if what she has to say is total nonsense.”

It’s the same “nonsense” that Boies, Gibbs and LaBolt embrace. But, that’s OK, they’re men.

WaPo’s David Weigel Resigns after left wing hate speech revealed

Breaking: WaPo’s David Weigel Resigns After More Conservative-bashing Emails Disclosed
June 25, 2010 by Lachlan Markay

Washington Post blogger Dave Weigel resigned today after a host of offensive e-mails surfaced revealing his disdain for much of the right – the beat he was charged with covering. Fishbowl DC, which published a number of those emails yesterday, confirmed the resignation with the Post just after noon.

Yesterday I reported on leaked emails from Weigel to a listserve of liberal journalists bashing conservatives and conservatism – you know, the people Weigel is supposed to be covering. As bad as those email were, a plethora of messages from Weigel published in the Daily Caller take the conservative-bashing to a whole new level.

The new emails also demonstrated that yesterday’s quasi-apology from Weigel was really not as sincere as he claimed. He said that he made some of his most offensive remarks at the end of a bad day. But these new emails show that there was really nothing unique about them, and that offensive remarks about conservatives really were nothing new or uncommon.

NPR Twice Promoted David Weigel as Chronicler of Conservative Extremism
June 25, 2010 by Tim Graham

The idea that Washington Post writer David Weigel was supposed to be a conservative — and not merely someone reporting on the conservative movement — was clearly not based on a review of Weigel’s output. Weigel didn’t just deconstruct conservatives for the Post, but was also presented twice recently by National Public Radio as a wise man assessing the fringiness of conservatives. Last October, they wanted to know how strange Fox News was, and whether they could be blamed for Tea Party protests. Weigel called their influence “massive.” Weigel typically suggested Fox and Glenn Beck were not “realistic” in painting President Obama as connected to ACORN and the SEIU.

On NPR’s Fresh Air on February 23, before he joined the Post, Weigel reported on CPAC and the Tea Party and embraced host Terry Gross’s idea that conservatives shouldn’t be big fans of government-enhancing Dick Cheney:

ACORN District Attorney Lets ACORN Off the Hook For Child Prostitution Tapes

ACORN District Attorney Lets ACORN Off the Hook For Child Prostitution Tapes
March 2, 2010 by Gateway Pundit

Yesterday, employees at ACORN in Brooklyn who were caught on video giving tax advice to a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute were cleared of criminal wrongdoing.  The Brooklyn DA is a member of the ACORN/Working Families Party. That means he signed their pledge, and worked for their endorsement… And, he found no wrongdoing. Funny how that works out, huh?

Undercover videos and assuming fake identities are journalistic tools

REVEALED: ACORN, NBC Worked Together in ‘Undercover Video Sting’
November 30, 2009 by BigGovernment.com (hat tip to The Western Center for Journalism)

Since the undercover ACORN videos from James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles first broke, the grand pooh-bahs of journalism have gone into self-absorbed philosopher mode. Rather than report on the ACORN corruption playing out before our eyes, “journalists” have tsk-tsked their way through thousands of words and yards of column inches making certain that everyone understands that what James and Hannah did IS…NOT…JOURNALISM. (As if that is the existential question to make sense of the ACORN videos.) Undercover videos and assuming fake identities are things real journalists do not do…except when they do.

Below is a page from ACORN’s 2005 Annual Report. In it, they tell the story of how one of their employees teamed up with NBC Dateline to do a ‘video sting’ on tax-preparer Jackson Hewitt.

ACORN Still Owes $2.3 Million in Overdue Taxes
November 16, 2009 by Matthew Vadum (hat tip to Bob Parks)

ACORN and its affiliates are content to impose crippling big-government laws, regulations, and taxes on Americans, but when called upon to obey those same rules, ACORN’s network of scofflaws and deadbeats simply refuses to comply.

ACORN and its affiliates currently owe more than $2.3 million in long overdue back taxes to all levels of government.

As of Nov. 11 the exact figure was $2,328,596.95.

ACORN owes money to the IRS, Arkansas, California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and to the cities of New York and Philadelphia.

ACORN changes its name, reputation stinks

ACORN drops tarnished name and moves to silence critics
June 21, 2009 by Kevin Mooney

Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) leaders are using the threat of a law suit to silence and intimidate critics, according to current and former members of the liberal activist group.
In a letter dated June 11 an attorney for ACORN advised top whistleblowers that their unauthorized use of the organization’s name could make them liable for monetary damages and injunctive relief.

Wade Rathke, who founded the organization, announced on his blog that ACORN International has officially changed its name to “Community Organizations International.”
