From Breitbart: American Psychiatric Association Reclassifies Pedophilia, Backtracks
November 2, 2013 by Dr. Susan Berry

The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) decision to once again reclassify pedophilia has led to further concerns that the professional organization is attempting to legitimize the disorder, paving the way for its defense and the recommendation of removal of age-of-consent laws.

From Huffington Post: Not All Pedophiles Have Mental Disorder, American Psychiatric Association Says In New DSM
November 1, 2013 by Hunter Stuart

“The difference [from the last edition of the DSM] is, you’re not automatically saying that as soon as someone has a marked, unusual erotic interest that they have a mental disorder,” said Ray Blanchard, who cowrote the chapter on sexual disorders in the new DSM.

The new manual specifies that in order for an atypical sexual behavior to be classified as a mental condition, a person must:

1. Feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society’s disapproval; or
2. have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person’s psychological distress, injury, or death, or a desire for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent.

Here we have two very different perspectives on the recent American Psychiatric Association DSM-5. At Breitbart, Dr. Susan Berry describes concerns that the APA is attempting to destigmatize pedophilia in much the same pattern used to destigmatize homosexuality beginning in the 1960s – by changing medical concepts and definitions. Regardless of what one thinks of homosexuality, the historical reality is that it was at one time regarded much the same as pedophilia is today. Now that stigma has largely been removed from homosexuality.

Over at HuffPo, Hunter Stuart has a different take. While Dr. Barry is concerned about an effort to establish a foundation upon which sexual deviants can indoctrinate society and influence public policy, Stuart doesn’t seem concerned. In fact, Stuart is sure to point out that as long as the pedophile is happy with his/her sexuality and is able to coerce the child victim into being “happy” about the sexual relationship, everything thing is okay.

Just as was once the case with gays, where homosexuals were once considered victimizers but now considered the victims of institutionalized discrimination, here pedophiles are being treated not as victimizers, but as victims of institutionalized discrimination. What ever you may think of homosexuality, the reality of the situation is that the same methods used to destigmatize that lifestyle are now being used to legitimize pedophilia.

Is there anyone left in the world who has a problem with the morally bereft anything-goes-as-long-as-you-don’t-hurt-anyone standard?
